TRANSCENDENT SERIES

My "Transcendent Series" of paintings deal with humanitie's relationship with nature. The stylization of these landscapes creates a theraputic experience for the viewer by asking for self reflection and vulnerability. Self knowledge is just as important as external knowledge and these pieces allow for deep self exploration.

Open World

*SOLD*  This piece is based on some photos I took looking out beyond Los Alamos to the rest of New Mexico. The amazing plateaus create beautiful dips and variations in the landscape that make for an interesting abstract interpretation.

I terms of concept the New Mexico subject matter prompted me to think about the amazing world around me and what new places I want to discover. New Mexico has been such a pleasure to explore and compare to Colorado and it makes me excited to find new and amazing places full of inspiration for my art.

Relational Harmony

*SOLD* This commissioned painting started with basic instructions to create an abstract landscape with a brown color palette. "Relational Harmony" brings to light the harmony found in the imperfections of familial relationships. The flaws, blemishes and mistakes found in a landscape can make it as unique and dynamic as a human relationship if we approach it with compassion and love.

Perception

*SOLD*  Our perception shapes our reality. Everything we see hear and experience is filtered by how we perceive it. When I view a landscape I experience it will my own personal emotions, thoughts and memories and these things shift how I see my surroundings. I feel it is important that we all acknowledge our filters that influence our reality so we can understand our biases then maybe we can shift our viewpoint and see how other people perceive the world around them.

Passing Time

*SOLD*This piece is based off of a photo I took of a passing landscape while in the car. Sometimes I feel like life is passing by so quickly and it feels important to embrace the significant moments so that we can lengthen time just a little bit. This moment of clarity can be found in the moon rising over this passing landscape.

Wind Swept

*SOLD*In this piece I really wanted to emulate the look of snowy mountains in Colorado. When I am up in the mountains skiing or hiking I can't help but feel humbled by their overwhelming mass and immense time on this earth. When I am surrounded by a dynamic landscape I cant help by feel the sweeping movements that push and pull between the massive mountains. This piece is my interpretation of these movements.

King Tide

*SOLD*  "King Tide"is a piece that expresses my love for the ocean and the beautiful colors, textures and movements it creates. Whenever I think of the ocean I think of balance. A balance between push and pull, aggression and calm, pride and humility. As a child growing up in Maui my dad  taught me to respect the ocean and seek to read and understand it instead of challenge it.  My dad is a lifelong surfer and he did his best to pass his wisdom and appreciation for the ocean on to me. It is safe to say that whenever I think of my dad I think of the ocean because they are intertwined and inseparable. Some of my fondest memories of Maui were not only the enjoyable experiences of surfing with my dad but also when day ended and I would drift off to sleep with the feeling of floating up and down over the incoming waves.

Pools of Light

*SOLD*  This piece is a stylistic departure from my more smooth depictions of landscapes.  I enjoyed using the palette knife to create sharp, rough textures that could contrast smooth textures. In this piece I wanted to portray the feeling of being immersed in a jungle. I have hiked through many jungles on my previous home Maui and I wanted to make the viewer feel enveloped in the wild.

Land and Sea

(Original unavailable) This piece directly explores my personal relationship with the land and the sea and my decision to leave an island surrounded my water to live somewhere landlocked. Growing up I never thought I had any sort of relationship with water, it was always just in my life in different ways like going to the beach or enjoying the rain. But once I left my island home of 18 years I realized how much I missed having the ocean near by and how important it was for me to experience water as much as possible. But along with this drastic change came a new fascination with the land around me. The mountains in Colorado are humbling, awe inspiring and majestic, they seem to reach into the sky with purpose and wisdom and they inspire me to paint. This Transcendent series of paintings merges my two biggest inspirations of art, I aim to create a seamless  relationship between land and sea and bring the viewer to a completely new environment.

Adaptation

This piece showcases the diversity and adaptive ability of the natural world. The difference in shapes and textures in this painting work in harmony to create a lush landscape. The diversity in our world should be celebrated and understood so that we grow and adapt together. Adaptation within nature and humanity is an incredibly strong quality that can lead to progress and unity.

Hesitation

*SOLD*  This painting brings a visual language to the concept of hesitation. On a personal note I have conducted much of my life with a heavy reliance on raw instinct and gut reactions. Growing up, I would rarely take a moment to think certain situations through because it didn't feel natural for me. As I have gotten older I have seen the value in holding back and taking a moment to reflect in order to be more thoughtful about my decisions. In these reflective moments I can find my center and achieve a more peaceful mind.

Exploration

*SOLD*  This piece acknowledges when it is time to explore and venture out to the unknown. Often we become comfortable in what we know and enjoy and forget to journey into the unknown. When we explore we learn and can find new passions and new experiences that shape us. When we explore, in a way we give into our most basic human nature.

Seeking

*SOLD* This piece explores the emotional landscape of a human and acknowledges when we need help. Our thoughts and emotions can sometimes hinder us when they become toxic and it is up to us to seek help. This help can become a beacon of hope and can lead us to healthier emotions. But seeking this help and asking for it is the hardest part.

In the Absence of Doubt

This painting illustrates the perception of a world without doubt. Many people live their lives in fear of failure and rejection and this doubt hides us from our full potential. This mindset of living in a moment without doubt is irrational and abstract because one must abandon the logic that tells us to plan for the worst. This piece is a vision of the momentary ideal, a powerful human mind pushing away all of the negative and grasping at perfection.

Open Perspective

*SOLD* This piece is an exploration of the journey the human mind takes throughout it's lifetime. The mind is impossibly capable of growth, adaptation and expansive thoughts but these components heavily rely on stimulus and inspiration. This inspiration can come from many places but one of the one of the oldest and purest is the nature that surrounds us. Mountains in particular can be extremely humbling and inspiring simultaneously and this tension brings the human mind to a state of balance that can lead to growth and self knowledge.

Ascension

*SOLD* This piece is derived from an incredibly inspiring landscape I photographed near Almont CO. I wanted to capture the unique movement found in the rolling hills, distant mountains and human made paths. I want the elevated feeling in this piece to suggest themes of hope, progress and self reflection. Acceptance of the self is the first step towards progress.

Beyond Comprehension

*SOLD* This piece is a continuation in style and concept of both "Rain Squall" and "Infinite." The scene was inspired by the Great Sand Dunes in southern Colorado but the stylization was inspired by the movement of water. This piece explores themes of detachment from reality, movement and interconnectedness.

Infinite

*SOLD* This piece brings to light themes of expansion, distance, movement and freedom. This piece asks its viewer to abandon preconceptions, bias and ego in order to experience their own emotions and ideas.

Rain Squall

*SOLD* This piece was significant step in my abstract technique because it stuck a balance between simple and complex. The ambiguity of the environment allows for viewer imagination and appreciation of simplicity.
