Among the Stars

(Featured in Holiday Miniatures Show: Abend Gallery December 2023) *SOLD* If I am nothing but a tiny ripple in a vast ocean, a speck of light in an infinite sky of stars, how do I matter? And if my time on this pale blue dot is only a microscopic blip on the timeline of its existence, why should I live with purpose? As she contemplated these thoughts the universe asked her to lay her head down. And as she did this she was shown the people that she loved and how her existence altered them, microscopically shifting their life path just by being herself and loving with her full heart. And then she saw how her influence in that person altered another person. And then her impact on that person influenced another. She was shown the spread of her impact again and again, a light that spread further than she could ever imagine, until it finally stopped and her presence in the world was not longer. Even though her impact was great eventually all memory of her would fade and her mark will eventually disappear.

The universe told her even though her wave would eventually return to the ocean as if it had never existed in the first place, it did exist in perfect beauty in the exact right moment and it will find its resting place back in the collective of the universe.

Witness to the Unknown

(Featured in Holiday Miniatures Show: Abend Gallery December 2023) Gazing up at the night sky in a time long before our own. We begin to see subtle green lights moving across the impossibly dark sky. The longer we look the more the colors seem to intensify and brighten as they form into amazingly long curtains reaching up to the heavens. In this time before scientific explanation this incomprehensible phenomenon ignites a spark of wonder in our hearts. A feeling of genuine humility while witnessing the absolute beauty of the planet that we live on.

And because we are human we choose to create beautiful stories and mythologies to explain this unimaginable wonder. Passing along these tales as a way to connect with one another and to find a semblance of understanding in vast unknown.

Hunter’s Gaze

(Featured in Holiday Miniatures Show: Abend Gallery December 2023) *SOLD* One of my favorite animals while growing up was the barn owl. I found their look and demeanor to be so unique and thought-provoking and I really loved reading about these creatures and discovering what made them unique. I especially enjoyed drawing them and trying to render their unique faces. And I always found their eyes to be incredibly mesmerizing and attention grabbing. These incredibly dark eyes hold so much expression and intensity which I hope that I captured in this piece. It gave me a lot of joy to capture this graceful creature in a painting.

Above Tree Line

(Featured in 5x5 Project XI July 2022) *SOLD* In this painting we find a person venturing far off the beaten path. In search of meaning and truth she has walked to heights where trees and other life dare not grow. A journey at these heights can be lonely and grueling but her drive keeps her going even in harshest conditions. And as she walks she starts to realize that the more distance she puts between herself and other people, the closer she must be to finding her truth.

Wide Open

(Featured in 5x5 Project XI July 2022) I have had the fortune of looking into these eyes almost everyday for the past 11 years. Every raw and complicated emotion has been felt and expressed through these beautiful and haunting eyes. They hold so much love, sorrow, passion, pain, joy and sadness that the only truth of this painting is that we are looking into pure infinity. Everyday a beautiful soul uses her eyes to see not just the good in our world but also the evil. As much as she sometimes wants to close them to the terrors of our world, she’s keeps them open feeling the pain and sadness that takes place everyday. With her eyes wide open and vulnerable, she takes in all that our world has to offer refusing the flinch at its horrifying beauty.

Fortis Avis

(Featured in 5x5 Project XI July 2022) *SOLD* There are many lessons that can be learned from the small and resourceful creatures of this world. They are patient while hunting and gathering food, diligent when building a nest or finding a home and resilient to even the harshest of weather. Sometimes when we look outside of ourselves for inspiration it can be found in unexpected places.

One Hundred Years

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) This painting explores a single moment expanded over a century . This woman has searched far and wide to find the perfect natural setting for her to sit and search for answers to her deepest questions. In her first few years sitting in this exact spot, she learns about herself, thinking about her uniqueness as an individual and coping with and later resolving past traumas that she let define her for so many years.

While sitting a little longer, she is able to open her mind beyond herself, recognizing the people that she has hurt and the people she has loved, forgiving herself for past mistakes and accepting who she is at her core. After this step she begins to feel every rock and every blade of grass that surrounds her as they begin to grow up her form and embrace her stillness. After several more years of sitting she begins to feel the presences of every single life form around her. Every insect, bird, mouse and rabbit emits a pulse of life that gives her energy and a sense of belonging. After many more years, the concept of time begins to lose its meaning and the straight line from beginning to end starts to connect end to end forming a circle. After sitting for 100 years her past and future fade away and she finds the moment.

Citadel

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) As she looks towards the setting sun, she thinks of the many people who tried to remove her from this exact spot. Their words trying to convince her that she was undeserving of love and too vulnerable to achieve her ambitions. She thinks of the many sacrifices that she made in order to forge her own path in a world trying to push her into mediocrity. No matter how much doubt manifested in her head and no matter how much negativity she received from others, she chose to hold her ground believing in her abilities. Poised and willing to grow, she learned from the cliffs around her to be confident and decisive while learning from the wild grass to flexible and move with the wind. As the ocean breeze blows through her hair and the waves embrace her feet, she reflects on the end of another day and she takes pride in trusting herself.

Coherence

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) This painting provides a visualization of the dichotomy between how we see ourselves and how others see us. When we do the intense work of learning about ourselves and consciously choose to grow we can feel lost and fragmented. Just like plants, as we grow our branches might split in order to reach in new facets of ourselves but they are still rooted to the same source. In our eyes this growing and splitting can make us feel fractured and undefined, lost because we are looking for purpose. But in the eyes of those who love us, they can step back and see us as a beautiful collage of intertwining and complex branches, growing towards the light of self-knowledge. When they look into our eyes they see all of our new and old facets defining us and guiding us to our true identity.

Light After Dark

International ARC Salon Semi-Finalist

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) This piece illustrates the morning after a prolonged darkness of pain and helplessness. When we hurt for the world we feel an unrelenting sadness to our core and it can be unbelievably difficult to see how the sun will rise again. There are so many aspects of this world that can make us feel powerless, to the point when we may even feel that have lost autonomy over our own bodies and minds. But on this particular morning, the sun rose with incredible power, casting warmth and light on all those people who try to do good in this world. The sunbeams illuminate these individuals showing their love and empathy and as you open your eyes you can see their drive to change our world for the better. Even knowing that the darkness will inevitably take over again, the intense light gives us a renewed sense of agency to fight for others and to fight for a better world.

Sower of Seeds

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) This painting shows a man in complete harmony with the nature that surrounds him. But this harmony hasn’t always existed, in the distant past this being thought  himself superior to the natural world and chose to exploit it for personal gain.  He completely lost his identity and his relationship with nature in the pursuit for power. Eventually this conflict reached a breaking point and the man was forced to confront his misdoings and reshape his relationship with the fading life that sounded him. This man spent years working to reverse his mistreatments to our world while closely studying how the smallest lifeforms live in cooperative harmony. Across these many years he has also done the work of self-reflection and personal growth to find a balance in his soul that gave him a renewed respect for nature. And once he found this balance and drastically changed his actions, the grass and trees around him began to feel safe to embrace him once again even while knowing his dark and selfish past. Even after all of the wrong he did, the most vulnerable life forms in our world embraced him with forgiveness and acceptance. This being who used to be a destroyer and conqueror has now became a true nurturer of life, serving as a protector of the planet that gave him everything he knows.

Protected Spirit

(Featured in Solo Show Terra Human June 2022) *SOLD* As we grow from children to adults our harsh and structured world does its best to conform us, placing us in categorized boxes of adulthood to keep our world organized. The first thing to be lost in this process is our childlike creativity that brings joy, wonder and excitement into our lives. The hands in this painting are protecting this pure and creative spirit even while the outside world attempts to extinguish it. This energetic spirit longs to dance, create with colors, sing songs and construct stories as a way to bring life into a sometimes colorless world. These hands are choosing to foster this spirit in order to encourage love and empathy in a world that needs it now more than ever.

Colorado Majesty

(Featured in the LA Art Show with Abend Gallery) *SOLD* This piece illustrates the stunning Colorado Rockies during the incredible transition months of fall. The size and beauty of this mountain range never fail to humble me while I think about how much time it took for them to form. How many seasons have these mountains seen? It’s incredible to think about how much the natural world inspires us to reflect on ourselves and what we can do with our time on this earth.

Behind Our Eyes

(Featured in the Abend Gallery 5x5 Project) *SOLD*This painting is about what exists behind out eyes. The soul inside every one of our bodies that has been there since the day we were born. This being is our true selves absent of the rules, restrictions and pain of the outside world. For some of us we discover and understand this identity right away and are able to live in true alignment from our early life onward. But for others it takes time, hardship and exhausting effort to find who is truly behind our eyes. And it is in this difficult process when we might think we may never be able to understand ourselves and how we should move about this world. If we are living among people who actively or unconsciously stunt our growth and journey towards self-understanding it can be hard to keep our heads up. Because many of us might even know who we are underneath the mask we put on everyday but we may not feel safe to reveal it to the world yet. But this misalignment between who we know we are and who we are pretending to be takes a toll and slowly breaks us down from the inside. And it can be debilitating to walk through this life not knowing how to live as our authentic selves.
No matter where you are on this journey, please don’t give up even when it is unbearable. One day soon you will have the opportunity to meet who you are truly supposed to be and your bravery will inspire those around you to do the same. And when you are able to emerge as your true self living the life that brings you joy and happiness the people around you who truly care for you will embrace you with open arms and a willingness to understand you.

Guiding Light

(Featured in the Abend Gallery 5x5 Project) *SOLD* This painting is about the tiny sparks of light that guide us throughout life, giving us inspiration and an excitement to do what we love. Along our long journey through life there are small moments of light that inspire us to take the next step even though the dark unknown makes us fearful. These sometimes microscopic light sources let us know that we are on the right path and that our hard work will be worth it. These tiny sparks of light take many forms, they might be a genuine compliment from a stranger, or a moment of pure self-satisfaction after an accomplishment or it could be a subtle smile from someone close to us, communicating that they are proud of who we are and what we are doing. Whatever form they take, these lights bring moments of reassurance that make our journey through the unknown a little more certain.

Interconnection

(Featured in the Abend Gallery Contemporary Figuration Show) The world contained within this painting shows us blending seamlessly with the environments that we love. Every memory, emotion and thought that is contained within us is interwoven with those of the earth to create a single beauty. The immense highs and lows in our lives directly mimic the mountains and valleys in a way that shows the earth understands us to the core. The mountains listen to our thoughts and feelings while the stars comprehend our dreams and aspirations. The trees plants and animals grow and live for decades only to lose their lives and begin again in another form.
As a viewer we are allowed only a momentary glance at this world through a window so that we may contemplate our existence and what we wish to do with our time.

Through the Leaves

(Featured in the Abend Gallery Contemporary Figuration Show) *SOLD*This painting shows a trapped man. Ever since he was born into the color of his skin he has only been seen in this way. We choose see him through the leaves, broken, unfinished, and most of all unlike us. We only see him in these leaves as a way to control him rather than trying to understand him. As a society we refuse to see this person and people who look like him in a different light and recognize that all people are complex and multifaceted individuals. Like all of us this man is striving to find success and meaning in his life but he lives in a world that feels the need to put him into a specific box. Even though he is a kind, sensitive and compassionate individual his intent is assumed to be malicious and selfish and so everyday he feels the need be extra accommodating to those who are threatened by him. As he looks out through the leaves he finds a world that is fearful of him and ready to challenge his every move due to the color of his skin rather than the content of his character. He sees a world that is ripe with opportunity for others but these opportunities have conditions and requirements that shut him out.
This man is looking us straight in the eyes and asking us to be better. He is asking to be set free from these leaves so that he can live a life untethered from where we put him.

The Lost Traveler

(Featured in the Abend Gallery Contemporary Figuration Show) This piece illustrates a man who has been searching for himself. It has taken him so long to get where his is right now and yet has a long way to go from here. He wishes to better himself through self discovery but the road has left him lost and exhausted. But what he doesn’t realize is that he is already learning and changing more than he realizes. His body is staring to crumble and break down to eventually be reformed stronger than before. And the plants and trees are beginning to see him for who he truly is and feel comfortable growing with him and nurturing his heart. After a long night of rest, the morning sunlight is touching the distant peaks soon to awaken this traveler to a new day of opportunity.

The people who despite the darkness surrounding them emit a light of empathy, kindness and understanding that inspires others. The heart of a giver is one that should be cherished.

Creator and Creation

(Featured in the Abend Gallery Holiday Miniatures Show) This piece illustrates the innate connection we all have with the natural world that created us. The incredible nature that surrounds us serves many purposes and one of which is the way in which it encourages us to look inward and recalibrate our identity. Often times our fast paced lifestyle causes us to lose sight of who we are and replaces our empathy with malice and judgment that distances us from others and ourselves. Our primal brains are still catching up with the ever changing lives that we live, which are filled with social media, technology and an overwhelming amount of complicated people.

But when we are able to step out of the day to day chaos and immerse ourselves in the nature that created us we connect with our surroundings and tap into our primal nature. This innate connection we have with nature can help us reestablish what we value in our lives and it can help us grow as individuals to then better serve others.

A Moment of Acceptance

(Featured in the Abend Gallery Holiday Miniatures Show) *SOLD* This piece serves as a reminder of the importance of our self image. How we think of and speak to ourselves greatly influences our mental health and mental well-being and unfortunately we can be our own biggest critics. But if we can choose to give ourselves the grace and patience that we give others we will find ourselves in a healthier mental state. Like many of us, the person in this painting sometimes asks too much of herself and can’t help but speak words of negativity in order to push herself. But these words can do more harm that we know, degrading our self worth and leaving us unbalanced. The moment in this painting is a moment of realization. A moment in which we see ourselves for all of our strengths and weaknesses and decide to give ourselves the grace that we need to stay healthy and balanced.

Walking Giants

This painting addresses the concept of humility. There is so much that we can obtain and achieve in our lives that it’s easy to forget the vastness of space and time as well as our small part in this infinite world.  We are seen in this painting traversing this world with true humility and a willingness to learn. As we walk we take care not to crush even the smallest plants and animals because we understand that all life plays an important role on this planet. As the luminous sunrise bathes the surrounding cliff edges with color and warmth we are reminded of the seemingly infinite amount of time this planet has been alive and changing. And we start to understand that our time here is short yet meaningful and there is much good that we can do if we walk tall and care for those who are both bigger and smaller than us.

Between Light and Shadow

The concept of this painting is strongly linked into the techniques I employed to create it. The biggest hurdle I needed to overcome in this particular piece was how to properly observe and render this figure which has so many complex and nuanced shadows. And when I identified this issue I couldn’t help but see the parallel to the shadows in our lives. It is no secret that many of us feel shaded by experiences in our lives that we just cannot seem to brighten. These experiences may even define us for a certain amount of time and control our behaviors because they affected us so deeply. I even felt this way when I started painting the figure’s face and couldn’t seem to see any end in sight. I felt a bit lost in these darker values and couldn’t see the distinct differences between colors. It seemed like colors and values were getting muddled in the shadows making me think there was no beginning or end to my brush strokes.
But as I progressed with this painting and persevered to give it a chance to develop I started to discover that with time and effort these shadows presented rare opportunities. I began to see the subtle colors that can be found in shadows because of reflected light. I started to understand that theses shadows created an amazing contrast that made the highlights even brighter. The figure I was painting was no longer defined by the shadows that used to haunt her rather now her character was enhanced and clarified by the this darkness. The shadows now seemed to server as a backdrop for all of the light that is embracing her.
We all experience shadowing in our lives but as we grow we learn to create our own definitions of ourselves and we can choose the path that allow us to see the most light.

Hidden Away

This piece deals with our reactions to stress and anxiety. The person in this piece has a tendency to respond to stresses in his life by pulling away and blending into his surroundings. He hopes that if he is invisible his problems won’t find him and he can take comfort by retreating into himself. As he blends further and further into the environments that surrounds him he starts to lose sight of his priorities and the traits that define him as a person.
By retreating like this he cuts himself off from others and the ways in which they can help him. In his brain he sees asking for help as a weakness and thinks his problems will only hurt the people closest to him. While he is pulling away from others his gaze narrows and he sees less and less of the big picture and only focuses on himself and the fact that he is stuck.
There are not right or wrong ways to deal with stress in our lives but the more we can let people into our realities they better they will understand us and how we process our issues.

Uncovered Voice

This piece seeks to illustrate the concept of viewpoint. We all view this world through our own unique filter that makes us who we are. We cannot help but view our surroundings through a window made up of our thoughts, hopes, fears, biases and beliefs. And each of our personal interpretations of the world deserves to be heard. We all encounter a form of doubt that tells you that our voices shouldn’t be heard and that our window is not as meaningful as someone else’s. And it is in these moments that we need to look inside ourselves and uncover the confidence to make our voice loud and clear. When you choose to speak your truth it not only adds meaning to your life but it encourages others to do so as well. The window through which you view the world is powerful.

As One

*SOLD* In this piece humans and nature breath as one. The divisions that we have insisted on for generations have evaporated and we finally see ourselves reflected in the natural world that surrounds us. Plants, trees and moss start to grow with her body as her hands reach into the earth with humility and understanding. The curves and angles of her limbs are reflected in the surrounding landscape showing the balance we can achieve when we listen and reflect. As she sleeps her breath soars with the birds in the sky while her heartbeat synchronizes with the core of the earth.
