SMALL WORKS COLLECTION
My small works collection is an expanding group of small paintings, studies and experimental paintings outside of my Terra Human series.
Our Gentle Hands
*SOLD* This painting imagines a new world where humankind finally understands that we are all a part of nature and the continuation of our existence requires balance. In this world we only take what we need and choose to replenish what we take. We understand and respect that our ecosystem is fragile so our decisions are thoughtful and forward thinking. Our hands are gentle, working hard to create while also preserve.
But most of all we understand that our existence is temporary and everything that we are and use is merely borrowed from the great collective.

Offering
*SOLD* This painting is a visualization for my love for nature and the comforting role it has provided for me growing up. When I initially thought about how I wanted this painting to look and what I wanted it to be about, I quickly realized that I wanted a specific type of tree to be growing out of my hand. I wanted it to be eucalyptus tree because these trees instantaneously bring me back to my childhood. I grew up surrounded by many different types of trees but these trees in particular had so many qualities that I loved. Visually they were always unbelievably tall making me feel humbled but also inspired at the same time. In addition they have an incredibly unique smell to them that always brings me peace and calm.
This piece is titled offering because I like to think that through my artwork I am offering you a new perspective on the way we view our relationship with nature. I hope that my paintings can help you see how incredibly giving the natural world is and how much comfort we all can find in it if we allow ourselves to be vulnerable.

Figure Study
This small figure study was a great opportunity to experiment with balancing realism with abstraction. I always really admire other artists for the amazing palette knife marks they are able to make so I really enjoyed applying similar abstract marks to this piece.

Hand Study
*SOLD*This small hand study was a create exercise in working out hand proportions as well as analyzing light and color. I loved the creation process for this piece especially creating the fragmented abstractions that not only add motion to the piece but also a subtle hint at a narrative.

Finding Light
*SOLD* This portrait study started as a short project but it quickly showed potential for something more interesting with a little extra work. This unique color palette showcases warm highlights grazing the profile of her face while contrasting with the cool shadows the portray depth. This piece served as an excellent exercise in how to utilize these temperature changes to convey realistic imagery that shows emotion and character.

A Fleeting Moment
*SOLD* This piece visualizes the significance of a moment and how important it is for us to pay attention. There are so many moments in our lives when the stars seem to align into something beautiful that can change the way you look at the world if you let it. There may be times in your life when, for whatever reason the light it just right, the sounds are soothing, the environment is stunning and the people you are with are perfect as they are and all of these things collide into a blissful fleeting instant that can bring you inexplicable joy and humility. Finding Distance
This piece visualizes our inherent need to retreat from others and find solace in being alone with nature. There are times when our minds can become exhausted by the constant input, stimulus and opinions of others and we need to step back and find our center again. The nature that surrounds us is always ready to provide an environment of peace and tranquility so that we can recharge and find ourselves once again.

Beyond the Window
*SOLD* I really wanted to achieve a unique environment in this piece through atmosphere, emotion and lighting. This woman is looking to towards something that she cannot quite grasp yet and her mind is not in the present. Because of her lack of attention to the here and now the environment around her fades in and out of focus and individual elements bleed into each other.

Impending Storm
*SOLD*This piece explores how our internal world affects our external environment. As the storm develops and creates conflict in his mind so too does the storm gain power above him. Everyday we are learning more about how much the internal state of our mind affects the world around us and the more we take time to understand our internal thoughts and emotions the more we will understand this fickle power.

Luminous
*SOLD* This figure study was a great exercise in understanding how light interacts with different surfaces. I really love the pose of the figure and the intricate folds of her dress. The really strong light source in this piece creates a vibrancy that affects every object and texture.

Contemplation
In this study I wanted to explore a portrait-like composition since it is so different that my typical full body paintings. This focus on the upper body gave me a great opportunity to really focus on the details in the face and the subtle posture.

Dissolve
In this study I explored texture and expressive marks as a means to render a figure and the emotion of that figure. By only using the palette knife as my tool for this piece I was able to loosen up my technique and find the value of expressive and unpredictable marks.

Majestic Rockies
*SOLD* This piece functioned as a study for a larger Terra Human piece. I have been extremely inspired by the dynamic angles, lines and crevasses found in the rockies, they create a nice little playground for my mind to wonder and explore.

Distant Rest
In this study I explored expressive and raw brushwork in order to portray movement and light. I worked on resisting my urge to over-blend colors and instead made bold marks that gave the piece a lot of character. This technique is not very instinctive to me but I really love the look of it so I plan on continuing to practice it.

Still Remains
This Terra Human study explores a loose and gestural technique to illustrate a figure. The woman in this piece takes on a ghost-like quality, barely existing in our world and blended with the surrounding nature. In this way the nature takes prescient over the human and demands respect and understanding.

Point in Time
Initially I started this figure study solely to practice my techniques for a possible Terra Human painting down the road. But while working on this piece I started to think about the subtleties within the image and what they say about the individual. To me this piece shows a small moment of vulnerability. Her posture shows a certain learned rigidity that has slightly faltered in a moment of self-reflection and contemplation. And a similar concept can be seen in her hair, always kept up in a purposeful and stylish way until this moment when it starts to come loose in a moment of weakness.

Mountain Water
This small landscape painting celebrates my love for finding water sources in the most unexpected of places. I love seeing how a body of water interacts with it's environment and enhances its surroundings. I really enjoyed working in a slightly different color palette for this study. I can sometimes be fearful of working in greens because I don't want a neon or alien look to my paintings but luckily I'm figuring out how to use it to my liking!

Patient
*SOLD* This figure study focuses on the quality of patience. From a young age we are taught the value of patience whether it’s sharing a toy with a sibling or saving our allowance up to buy something special. I personally place a very high value on patience because it shows a belief in yourself and in those around you. When you are both patient and persistent in your career or relationships it shows you are willing to put the work in with no expectation of an immediate reward. You are invested in the long game in order to do the right things with your personal touch. I hope I can continue to learn from the lessons of being a patient adult so I can continue to grow and learn about myself.

Figure Study #1
*SOLD* This painting is a study for a larger Terra Human piece. One of the primary reasons I am interested in this image is the pose of the figure. This woman’s posture shows a certain amount of relaxation and ease that I feel would create an interesting theme of self appreciation in a Terra Human painting. Her body language along with the color suggest a feel of whimsy and lightness that serves as a nice contrast to my previous more serious paintings.

Winter Frost
*SOLD* This painting encapsulates one of my favorite components of winter in Colorado. Being from Maui my first experience with snow was in Colorado Springs when a beautiful morning frost covered everything with soft fluffy snow. This piece aims to convey the soft silence that can be found in a snow-covered landscape. I find that this silence can encourage self reflection and a meditative state of mind.

New World
*SOLD* In my paintings I often draw my inspiration from intangibles such as emotions, concepts and mentalities but I sometimes find it is beneficial to go back to what first drew me into art in the first place. This would be awe inspiring landscapes because they bring me joy and make me think beyond myself and Glacier National Park certainly did this during my summer road trip. When viewing this in person I felt inspired to create a painting that could bring other people joy and reflective thoughts. This piece asks for humility and contemplation from it's viewer. The dynamic physical structures of our world have been in the process of creation for longer than we can comprehend.

Trapped in Light
This piece involved an experimental style change that resulted in a unique mood. "Trapped in Light" illustrates the pressures of playing a social role when you feel as if there is a constant spotlight on you. This spotlight is the social expectations of our society and it tells you what to say what to think and how to react to other people. This spot light makes us feel as if we are performing for each other and just trying not to go off script.

Loss of Singularity
*SOLD* This piece deals with the strains of the outside world and how they pull at and challenge our inner being. There are many people and circumstances in life that tell us to do just about anything but listen to ourselves. We are asked to consider logic, reason and the opinions of other people. But we are never taught to listen to what we truly feel. I encourage you to calculate your own internal compass and allow it to guide you above all else.

Watching Over

Hesitation
*SOLD* This painting brings a visual language to the concept of hesitation. On a personal note I have conducted much of my life with a heavy reliance on raw instinct and gut reactions. Growing up, I would rarely take a moment to think certain situations through because it didn't feel natural for me. As I have gotten older I have seen the value in holding back and taking a moment to reflect in order to be more thoughtful about my decisions. In these reflective moments I can find my center and achieve a more peaceful mind.
Original Piece Size: 12"x24"
Medium: Oil on Panels (2)
