NEW MEXICO SERIES

My  New Mexico series is a compilation of paintings that I created in the summer of 2018 while living in Los Alamos New Mexico. Aside from a few commissioned paintings, almost every piece I created was inspired by New Mexico. I have fallen in love with this unique landscape so much in fact that I have decided to create a special promotion to give back to this beautiful state in a small yet meaningful way.

I will be donating 10% of all the profits from all of my New Mexico paintings to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish conservation program.

Fragmentation

This piece melds a several of my favorite styles with my “Terra Human” subject matter. My aim in creating this pieces was to utilize a linear and geometric style and a rough textured looseness to surround and immerse the figure and trees.

This figure along with the surrounding nature is fragmented. Broken up and separated into pieces that fit in some areas but don’t make her a cohesive image.  Our external world demands this of us at times. It asks us to be a certain type of person and act a certain way to fit the circumstances of a situation even if that isn’t who we are or how we see ourselves. The situation turns a part of our personality into a puzzle piece that fits into this particular set of circumstances but doesn’t fit into our picture of our identity.

It can be difficult to stay consistent with our personality and stay true to our complete image because this can sometimes separate your from others and make you feel different and unaccommodating. But if you commit to keeping your puzzle pieces unchanged by others you will come closer and closer to the people you are supposed to be with who see you and your complete self and love you for it.

Cascade

This painting was a nice change of pace because my typical approach to landscapes its usually in a zoomed out scale. In this piece I was able to get up close and personal with the details found in the  scene.  I was surprised to see how much the shapes and textures created movement throughout the painting since I usually find movement through the overall composition.

This piece is also a nice example of my love for water. Even in a desert climate I always seek out sources of water that I can experience. Since I grew up near water, I find it really comforting and soothing. When I look at this piece I can hear the flow of the water weaving in-between the rocks and small bugs hidden in the surrounding grass.

Williams Lake

This painting was a pleasure to create. I was so incredibly inspired by this location and the amazing weather that changed the mood. The feeling of this lake was very unique because it was so high in elevation so it was amongst the clouds and yet it was still surrounded by even higher mountain peaks. My favorite part of this lake was that if felt  so pure and isolated from the influences of people and our dominance.

Ashes

This piece utilizes a reference of the burn scar near Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just like this landscape, we all have scars and they affect us all differently. These scars can come from people or experiences or even our own emotions and we carry them with us through life. And I personally feel that it is okay that we have scars, they contribute to who we are and how we interact with others. Our scars make us unique and sometimes bring us inspiration or motivation. But I also feel it is important that we don’t let our scars define us and dictate our lives. We cannot turn back time and remove what caused the scar but we can choose how it influences us now. We have all been hurt but we still deserve love.

Jemez Springs

This piece expresses my appreciation for the beautiful New Mexico scenery. I started this painting out in the environment and it was a real pleasure experiencing all of the sites and sounds of the Jemez National Recreation Area. While painting I was surrounded by young rock climbers and their instructors who were conquering the impressive rock faces with determination and laughter. Painting this piece outdoors strengthened my relationship with nature and inspired me to pursue more outings like this one.

Sensitive

This piece directly addresses a human quality that is very dear to my heart. Male sensitivity is in my opinion an incredibly important quality that I hope we can allow and encourage. Growing up I was a very sensitive boy and for a large part of my childhood I thought this was a negative quality that made me different. Many boys around me thought it was silly to empathize with others or cry because they were taught that these things showed weakness. For me my art was a safe place were I could feel emotions and experience things on a deep level without consequences. Art allowed me to observe and feel things with intensity and passion.

As I am getting older I am realizing how crucial sensitivity in men really is. It allows us to be aware of our emotions and give them names. It allows us to have complex thoughts that don’t lead to rash decision making. I am trying to be more open with my feelings especially around other men so that they can feel free to embrace their own sensitivity and understand that emotional vulnerability is not a weakness it is a strength.

Open World

This piece is based on some photos I took looking out beyond Los Alamos to the rest of New Mexico. The amazing plateaus create beautiful dips and variations in the landscape that make for an interesting abstract interpretation.

I terms of concept the New Mexico subject matter prompted me to think about the amazing world around me and what new places I want to discover. New Mexico has been such a pleasure to explore and compare to Colorado and it makes me excited to find new and amazing places full of inspiration for my art.
